mehrraum uses the temporary space potential of existing and future spatial programs to promote new, socially, ecologically and economically sustainable mixes of uses. mehrraum acts as an efficient catalyst for the parallel use of economically less favorable commercial, social, artistic and cultural uses.
In existing buildings and in future planning there is a great space potential through changed usage concepts and parallel use. In the context of social change towards more sustainability and community spirit, these aspects must be considered more thorough.
Objective
Taking the increasing scarcity of space and resources into consideration, the aim of the mehrraum study is to focus on the unused potential of existing space. The unused potential is present in areas and infrastructures that are not sufficiently used to their capacity over the day, week and month. A key reason for these inefficiencies are strict definitions and regulations for specific room programs, but also ownership constellations, rental and operating concepts, resulting in marginal operation of these areas within a certain period of time. Apart from that these areas remain idle. The study aims to break this pattern.
Strategy
The concept of mehrraum is based on the principle of multiple usage by scheduling complementary uses over time. Inefficiencies related to temporary use of space are replaced by full utilization according to temporal capacities of areas, rooms and infrastructure.
